Box Score BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The William Woods men's tennis team produced rewarding results at the Central-East ITA Regional last weekend. Aaron Westerlund secured his spot at the ITA Nationals in Rome, Ga. as he was the champion of the Central-East ITA Regional.
 
Men's A Draw Singles
Aaron Westerlund went undefeated throughout the entire ITA Regional. Breezing by the first round, Westerlund won 6-0, 6-1. Moving into the second round, he defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-2. Westerlund fought out a tough match in the quarterfinal round with a 3-6, 7-6(3), (10-7) victory. In the semifinals, he downed his opponent 6-3, 6-4. It was an all-Owl final as Westerlund and Christopher Vleeming Ortiz played each other. Westerlund was able to pull out a 6-1, 6-0 defeat over Vleeming Ortiz. This secured Westerlund's spot in ITA Nationals in Rome, Ga. on October 17. Runner up, Vleeming Ortiz will also attend ITA Nationals.
 
Vleeming Ortiz had a bye the first round, following a 6-1, 6-3 second round victory. He battled to secure a 7-6(4), 4-6, (10-8) defeat in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Vleeming Ortiz won against former Owl, Christian Barbieri, 3-6, 6-2, (10-8). As stated above, Vleeming Ortiz was the second place finisher in the Central-East ITA Regional to Westerlund.
 
Patrick Shelepov took a first round win 2-6, 7-5, (10-4). He moved to the second round securing a 5-7, 6-2, (10-2) defeat. Shelepov lost in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 1-6.
 
Jesus Amezcua went into a three-set match in the first round, but would come through with a 2-6, 6-2, (10-4) win. He picked up another win in the second round, 6-3, 6-0. Amezcua lost in the quarterfinals, 1-6, 2-6.
 
Men's B Draw Singles
Corey Hockenbury had a first round bye, but was defeated 2-6, 0-6 in the second round.
 
Men's A Draw Doubles
The senior duo of Aaron Westerlund and Christopher Vleeming Ortiz had a successful doubles run. They had a first round bye, and followed with a win in the second round, 8-4 over Grand View. In the quarterfinals, the duo faced Olivet Nazarene and earned an 8-4 victory. Moving to the semifinals, Westerlund and Vleeming Ortiz defeated a pair from Cardinal Strich, 8-4. This put the senior duo in the finals. This match went to three sets, but would fall just short, 3-6, 6-2, (10-6).
 
Seniors, Zach Frisbie and Sam Bird were able to grab an 8-2 first round win over Holy Cross. They were defeated in the quarterfinals, 8-5 by Cardinal Strich.
 
Juniors, Jack Campbell and Nathan Cooke paired up as a doubles team, but lost in the first round to Olivet Nazarene, 8-6.
 
Jesus Amezcua and Patrick Shelepov teamed up, but would be defeated by Cardinal Strich, 8-5.
