MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 22 William Woods University men's tennis team is set to compete for the fourth time at the NAIA National Championship on Tuesday, May 18. The Owls will face 15 University of Mobile (Ala.) in the opening round.
The two teams will face off at 1:30 p.m.in the Mobile Tennis Center. Mobile is ranked 15
th in the final NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
FULL SCHEDULE
The Owls earned their fourth trip to Nationals after earning the automatic bid as the Heart of America/American Midwest Conference/Sooner tournament champion for the fourth consecutive year. The Owls went 16-3 on the season.
Competing at No. 1 position in singles, junior
Patrick Shelepov went 11-4 and is currently ranked 42 in the Oracle/ITA NAIA National Singles Rankings. He is also ranked No. 1 in the Central Region Singles.
Freshman
Ben Grumley competed at No. 2 position and went 10-5 on the season. He is currently ranked No. 9 in the Central Region Singles.
Vitek Subert alternated between No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 positions. He went 3-0 at No. 3, he went 5-1 at No. 4, and 3-2 at No. 5 positions. He is currently ranked and he is in four matches winning streak. Subert is currently ranked No. 17 in the Central Region Singles.
Frehsman
Mladen Novovic mainly competed at the No. 4 spot. He went 5-2 on the season and won five matches in a row.
Robert Schorr competed in the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 spots. He went 1-0 on the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. He went 2-0 playing at No. 4, he went 5-0 in the No. 5 spot and he went 2-2 on the No. 6. Schorr won nine consecutive matches this season.
Senior
Aaron Westerlund competed in the No. 3 spot, and went 10-3 on the season. He is currently on a nine-matches winning streak and he also tabbed NAIA Player of the Week. Westerlund is ranked No. 15 in the Central Region Singles.
Shelepov and Grumley went 11-5 on the season at the No. 1 spot. They are ranked 19 in the Oracle/ITA NAIA National Doubles Rankings and they are also placed in the No. 1 spot in the Central Region Doubles.
Competing at the No. 2 spot, Westerlund and Schorr went 8-0 on the season winning eight consecutive matches. They are ranked No. 5 in the Central Region Doubles.
Jack Campbell and Subert competed in the No. 3 spot. They went 8-2 on the season.
