No. 11 Owls Sweep Southwestern in the First Round of NAIA National Championship

MOBILE, Ala. – The William Woods University women's tennis team won their fifth consecutive match after a 5-0 sweep over Southwestern College in the first round of the NAIA Nationals Championships. The Owls improve to 15-5 on the season.

The Owls won the doubles point after winning at no. 1 and no. 3 matches.

Zlata Shuraeva and Ana Zavala paired up at no. 1 doubles earning a 7-5 victory over Catherine Coe and Samantha Loving. In no. 2 doubles, Marta Calvo Larraz and Hannah Meyer were defeated 6-4 by Mariana Ochoa and Alexa Powers. In no. 3 doubles, Rukshika Wijesooriya and Mireia Jordan took down Brynn Harmsen and Caroline Henry, 6-1.

The Owls clinched a spot in the second round winning at no. 1, no. 2, no. 4, and no. 5 singles.

In no. 1 singles, Shuraeva defeated Ochoa, 6-2, 6-0. In no. 2 singles, Zavala took a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Loving. Wijesooriya earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Powers, in no. 4 singles. Competing in no. 5 singles, Jordan defeated Henry, 6-0, 6-1.

Next for the Owls is the No. 7 seed Louisiana State University-Alexandria in the second round of the NAIA Nationals on Wednesday, May 19. First serve is set to 9 a.m.
