Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's tennis team opened their season competing at the William Woods Invite this weekend. The Owls competed against two NCAA Division II teams, Rockhurst University and Southwest Baptist University.
Competing on flight A in singles,
Ben Grumley defeated Rockhurst, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round and fell to Southwest Baptist in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-2.
Vaclav Schneider earned a win vs. Rockhurst, 7-6, 7-6 in the quarterfinals, and fell to Southwest Baptist in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-2.
Patrick Shelepov fell to Southwest Baptist in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-3.
On flight B,
Robert Schorr was the runner up after winning his quarterfinals match vs. Rockhurst, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3, followed by a victory over Marcos Salamanca de Arcos (Woods), 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals and falling in the finals to Southwest Baptist, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
Salamanca de Arco defeated Rockhurst in the first round, 6-3, 6-4, followed by a 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 victory over Southwest Baptist in the quarterfinals and then fell to Schorr (Woods) in the semifinals.
Vitek Subert won his quarterfinals match over Southwest Baptist, 6-2, 3-6, 10-3, and then fell to also Southwest Baptist in the semifinals, 6-1, 4-6, 14-12.
On flight C,
Nathan Cooke was the runner up after winning his first-round match vs. Southwest Baptist, 6-4, 6-2, followed by a victory over
Patrick Bernius (Woods) in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2 and falling to Southwest Baptist in the finals, 6-3, 6-1.
Bernius defeated Rockhurst, 7-6, 6-2, in the quarterfinals and then fell to Cooke (Woods) in the semifinals.
Isaiah Buse fell in the first round to Rockhurst, 6-0, 6-1.
Jaeden Mukkaladyil defeated Rockhurst in the quarterfinals, 6-7, 7-6, 11-9, and then fell to Southwest Baptist in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Grumley and Shelepov were the runner up after winning their quarterfinals match vs. Rockhurst, 6-1, then defeating Southwest Baptist in the semifinals, 6-3, and falling short in the finals to Southwest Baptist, 6-2.
Mukkaladyil and Salamanca de Arcos defeated Southwest Baptist in the first round, 7-5, and fell also to Southwest Baptist in the quarterfinals, 6-3. Subert and Cooke fell to Southwest Baptist in the first round, 6-3. Schneider and Schorr won their first-round match, 6-3, and fell to Southwest Baptist in the quarterfinals, 7-5.
Next for the Owls is the ITA Regional Tournament on Sep 23-25 in Bourbonnais, IL hosted by Olivet Nazarene University.
