Schneider Wins Singles, Nahirniak and Shelepov are Doubles Runner Up at ITA Central-West Regionals

WICHITA, Kan. – Sophomore Vaclav Schneider of the William Woods University men's tennis team is the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central-West Regional Champion. Graduate Student Patrick Shelepov and Freshman Zinovii Nahirniak are the doubles runner up.
 
Singles Competition:
Competing as the No. 1 seed, Vaclav Schneider defeated Christian Martin in his first-round match 6-0, 6-0, followed by a 6-4, 6-4 win in the second-round over Luca Link. In the third-round, he took a 6-3, 7-5 win against Pablo Olmedo and then in the quarterfinals, he grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over #8 Michael Beltran. In the semifinals, Schneider defeated Milan Bucek 6-4, 6-0 and then became the champion with a 6-1, 6-1 win over #7 Jorge Chevez.
 
No. 2 seed, Zinovii Nahirniak lost in the quarterfinals. He defeated Augusto Silva Morais in the first-round 6-1, 6-2, followed by a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ryosei Masuda in the second-round. He took a 2-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory over Antoine Testaud de Marchin in the third-round and then fell short to Jorge Chevez 4-6, 6-0, 10-5, in the quarterfinals.
 
No. 3 seed Vitek Subert lost in the semifinals of a very close match. In the first-round, he grabbed an easy win over Shawn Springer 6-1, 6-0, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jose Merino in the second-round. He defeated Alejandro Hernandez-Carreno in the third-round 7-5, 6-3 and then took a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mathieu Vinet. In the semifinals, Subert fell short to Jorge Chevez 7-6, 1-6, 6-2.
 
No. 4 seed, Patrick Shelepov lost in the third-round. He quickly won the first-round over Zeke Mumford 6-1, 6-0 followed by a 6-2, 6-2 in the second-round over Oscar Brouwer. In the third-round, he fell to Milan Bucek 7-5, 6-1.
 
No. 5 seed, Ben Grumley lost in the quarterfinals. In the first-round, he took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Collin Phelps followed by a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Ryan Kitchin in the second-round. He defeated Federico Poi in the third-round 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 but fell short in the quarterfinals to Milan Bucek 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
 
No. 13 seed, Robert Schorr lost in the second-round. He grabbed a quick win in the first-round against Oscar Aguilera 6-0, 6-1 but unfortunately dropped a heartbreaker to Alex Sherer 7-6, 1-6, 15-13.
 
Doubles Competition:
Vaclav Schneider and Vitek Subert were the No. 1 seed and lost in the semifinals. They won their first-round match by retirement. In the second-round, they defeated Lucca Struffi and Tycho Janssen 8-5 followed by an 8-4 win in the quarterfinals over Julian Toloza and Oscar Giorgio. In the semifinals, they fell to teammates #4 Patrick Shelepov and Zinovii Nahirniak 2-1 and retired.
 
No. 2 seed, Ben Grumley and Andrej Jovanovic lost in the quarterfinals. They took an 8-6 win in both first-round and second-round against the duo of Alejandro Carreno-Hernadez and Davis Steadmand and Trey Murphy and Zhiyuan Wei, respectively. In the quarterfinals, they fell 8-3 to Alex Sherer and Bryce Ware.
 
Competing as the No. 4 seed, Patrick Shelepov and Zinovii Nahirniak were the runner up. They defeated Diego Navarro and Clement Martin in the first-round 8-3 followed by an 8-6 win over Federico Poi and Logan Engela. In the quarterfinals, they grabbed a 9-7 victory over Ryan Kitchin and Benjamin Erdmann followed by a 2-1 retirement win over teammates #1 Vaclav Schneider and Vitek Subert. In the finals, they fell short to Michael Beltran and Martin Milos 7-6, 6-2, 10-7.
 
Vaclav Schneider will head to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia on October 13-16. Competition will take place at the Rome Tennis Center.
