FULTON, Mo. - William Woods (8-3-3, 1-0-2 AMC) extended its unbeaten streak in men's soccer to 10 consecutive matches, but missed a solid opportunity to move up in the AMC standings on Tuesday night as the Owls drew 0-0 with Hannibal-LaGrange University (2-5-3, 0-2-1).
Matt Dworak posted his third shutout of the year, needing to make just two saves on the night.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that Hannibal-LaGrange was content to sit back in pursuit of a draw, and the Owls struggled to exploit spaces in the attacking third.
Breck McGrail had the first real chance of the match for either team, but his shot in the 10th minute was handled by Nicolas Veneros.
The Owls nearly broke through just after the half-hour mark, after a shot by
Florian Senst was redirected off target for a Woods corner. HLGU was able to barely keep the first two corners out of danger, clearing back-to-back balls across the end line, but finally mustered a full clearance on the third.
McGrail had another opportunity stopped by Veneros in the 38th minute, but the teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
The Trojans were able to string a little bit of sustained possession together to begin the second half, earning a corner kick in the 52nd minute as Dvorak parried a shot from Benjamin Contreras wide.
Woods began to find a little bit of success moving to a more direct attacking option, but were ultimately unable to get into a rhythm with the type of physicality that was being allowed by the officiating crew.
Miles Andrews had one final chance for WWU in the 89th minute, but the freshman was unable to strike the ball as cleanly as he would have liked, and Veneros made the stop.
Nest up for William Woods are its toughest matches of the season, beginning with a road trip to no. 16 Missouri Baptist. Kickoff for Saturday's match is set for 7 p.m.
