WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - In need of a win to stay in the top half of the AMC standings, William Woods (5-7-3, 2-1-2 AMC) found its scoring touch on the road, as
Lauren Helmert bagged a brace and four other Owls chipped in goals in a 6-1 win over Williams Baptist (0-12-1, 0-5-1 AMC) on Saturday.
Cindy Gonzalez also had a multi-point game for Woods, adding an assist to her goal.
The Owls were relentless in the attack throughout the match, opening the scoring in the 14th minute. After forcing a turnover at midfield,
Megan Hughes played a long ball into the corner to
Hannah Loethen. After a couple of touches, Loethen sent a cross to the top of the six-yard box that was ushered in by Helmert.
Sydney Balducci doubled the Owls lead in the 26th minute, collecting a lofted cross from
Lydia Sims and hitting a left-footed shot back across goal into the right side netting for her fourth goal of the season.
Gonzalez found
Mackenzie Boyle open in the 39th minute to push WWU's lead to 4-0, and then called her own number in the 43rd minute, scoring her fourth of the season off an assist from
Sam Poehlmann.
The Owls added two more goals in the 58th (Helmert from
Zoe Hargis) and the 82nd (
Leah Hays) minute, with head coach
Lauren Robb able to rotate
Reina Tiefel in to replace
Sierra Hahn in the 73rd minute.
Williams Baptist was finally able to threaten in the 84th minute, with a deep long ball over a pressing Woods back line.
Lydia Sims gave chase and was able to catch the WBU attacker, but as the pair continued toward goal their legs got tangled up, and Sims was whistled for a foul in the penalty area, earning a caution.
After a brief stoppage as the athletic training staff came on the field to attend to the WBU forward, Kenzie Hatmann was able to convert the penalty at the 84:02 mark, but it would be the only threat for WBU.
William Woods earned nine corner kicks to just one for the Eagles, and WBU was whistled for five fouls to four for The Woods.
The Owls close out the regular season with a pair of home contests, beginning with a Tuesday tilt against Harris-Stowe State University. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
