Owls Hang Tough Against NCAA Division II Northwest Missouri State In Exhibition

MARYVILLE, Mo. - William Woods University traveled to undefeated NCAA Division II opponent Northwest Missouri State on Saturday for an exhibition matchup, falling by the score of 71-47. Kourtney Kendrick and Jersee Wren led the Owls offense with eight points each.

The Owls would get the first bucket of the game on a layup by Macie Edwards to go up 2-0 with 9:12 remaining in the 1st quarter. NWMSU scored the next nine points and led 9-2 with 5:41 remaining in the quarter. WWU was able to outscore the Bearcats 7-6 to finish the quarter and trailed 15-9.

A quick start to the second quarter saw NWMSU jump out to a 12-point lead 27-15 with 3:30 remaining in the second quarter, Sydney Booker's jumper with 1:05 remaining in the quarter saw the Owls reduce the deficit to nine before a Bearcat basket with :35 remaining made the halftime score 33-22.

Both teams traded baskets three times during the first three minutes as the Owls stayed within striking distance trailing 39-28 with 7:31 remaining in the third. NWMSU built its largest lead of the quarter at 47-32 but back-to-back baskets by Aiyanna Tanksley saw WWU claw back to within 11, 47-36 with 2:12 to go. The Bearcats finished the quarter on a 5-2 run and led 52-38 after three quarters.

In the 4th quarter NWMSU used a 16-0 run to go up 68-38 with 4:23 left in the game, outscoring the Owls 19-9 in the quarter to win the game by a final score of 71-47.

Sydney Booker led the way with four rebounds and also added four points. WWU equaled the Division II squad in the paint, scoring 36 points. The Owls are back in action on Tuesday night as they take the short trip across town to battle Westminster College at 6 p.m.
