Box Score 2 OTTAWA, Kan. - Rylee Hagens went 3-4 with 1 RBI across the doubleheader for William Woods (4-5), but the Owls dropped both games to no. 17 Ottawa University, 8-0 (6) and 3-2 on Saturday.
"Taking on a top-25 team is always tough, but it was great to see our team put together some hits in the top of the seventh in game two," said head coach
Tracy Gastineau. "Even though we didn't get a win, we are able to walk away feeling better about our potential as a team."
The Owls put runners in scoring position in the top of the first, with
Sydney Wilbeck and Hagens leading off with back-to-back singles and moving up 60 feet on a passed ball by Ottawa's Reagan Hammons.
Ottawa pushed a single run across in its half of each of the first two innings, but WWU retired the Braves in order in the third and fourth.
After the home team posted three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Woods mustered a pair of baserunners but couldn't push them across, and Ottawa closed out the first game with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Woods fell behind again early in game two as Ottawa scored one in the fourth and added two in the fifth. WWU was not without a glimpse of success over the span, as the Owls mustered baserunners in the first, third and fourth innings.
In the top of the seventh, however, the Owls settled in.
Arianna Donovan drew a one-out walk, then back-to-back singles by
Addie Rhea and
Iliana Manzano loaded the bases and chased Ottawa starter Madison Carney from the game.
Rhea scored on
Madison Leckrone's groundout to short and Hagens pushed Manzano across with a pinch-hit single.
The Owls head east for a six-game stint at the Gulf Shores Invitational, with Thomas University first on the slate at 6 p.m. Friday, March 1.
