Owls Unable To Tame Windy Conditions At Park

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PARKVILLE, Mo. - Battling swirling winds that offered a distinct home-field advantage, William Woods (5-13) dropped both ends of a softball doubleheader to Park University (8-6) on Tuesday afternoon. Ally Mahoney was able to take advantage of the briefest of lulls in the wind and blast a solo shot in the top of the sixth in game one for Woods.

Park opened up a three-run lead in the bottom of the first, as Chloe Gilbert capitalized on a pair of one-out walks with a three-run shot to right center. After Shelby Sanders drew a HBP from the Owls starter, Sarah Randermann came on in relief and settled into a rhythm, forcing back-to-back harmless flouts.

Woods managed to threaten in the top half of the second, third and fourth innings, but stranded seven runners over the three frames. The Owls were able to hold the line defensively, however, allowing Park just two baserunners over the same stretch.

After both sides muddled through the fifth, Mahoney led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to the exact same spot as Gilbert's first inning dinger. Woods tried to claw back to level terms, as Madison Leckrone was plunked and Rylee Hagens drew a walk, both with one out. The Owls unfortunately couldn't push either runner across, and Park scratched its lead back to 4-1 in the bottom half of the inning.

After Jessica Keilholz reached on an error by the Pirates' third baseman to start the seventh, Arianna Donovan thought she had picked up a perfect one-out single with a looper into right. Nia Muniz came up firing for Park however, and turned the single into a fielder's choice as her throw to second was just barely in time to pick up the force on Keilholz.

Park again opened the nightcap with a three-run first inning, with Sanders knocking in a two-run homer to center field to highlight the scoring for the Pirates.

WWU mustered threats in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth, but wasn't able to push a run across until the sixth, but it was not enough of a response to a three-run fifth inning from the Pirates.

The Owls return to Backer West for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend, hosting Mission University in a 2 p.m. double dip on Saturday, March 16.
