Box Score 2 HANNIBAL, Mo. - Although the Owls certainly made use of different approaches, the result was the same in both games of the doubleheader as
Micaiah Cordell picked up victories in the circle as William Woods (11-15, 2-0 AMC) swept Hannibal-LaGrange (2-22, 0-2 AMC) 7-5 and 7-6 on Friday.
Woods scored three runs in the bottom of the first in game one, as Brooklyn Spillman drew a leadoff walk and stole second. A single by
Ella Aguiar plated Spillman, and Aguiar moved to second on the throw home.
Jessica Keilholz was plunked to put two Owls on the bases and a groundout to short by
Sydney Wilbeck moved the runners up a base.
Arianna Donovan looped a single to left scoring Aguiar and Keilholz, but despite loading the bases, WWU couldn't add to its lead.
Hannibal-LaGrange strung six hits together in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs to claim a one-run edge going into the second.
As Spillman returned to the plate to lead off the second, she blasted a double to left and sparked a four-run outburst by WWU. Unfortunately, she couldn't continue the rally as she came to bat for the second time in the inning, striking out with the bases loaded.
HLGU was able to snatch one run back in the bottom of the second, but the offense for both teams dried up quickly. Woods had the best chance down the stretch, putting two runners aboard in the top of the seventh, but the 7-5 result stood firm.
The Owls scored three runs in the top of the first in game two, but that's where the similarities ended. WWU was able to strand three Trojan baserunners in the bottom of the first, but couldn't find a rhythm, going scoreless in the second and third.
Hannibal unleashed an onslaught in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs to reclaim the lead. The Trojans capitalized on a pair of WWU errors in the inning, mustering four hits in the frame.
Ally Mahoney scratched back a run for Woods in the top of the fourth, turning her leadoff walk into a run after moving up on a sac bunt by
Madison Leckrone and a groundout by
Morgan Collins then scoring on a wild pitch.
The Trojans answered in the bottom of the six to reclaim a two-run margin, as Madison Staley reached via a leadoff HBP and moved to second on a sac bunt.
Woods finally hit its stride in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs. After a bit of overzealous baserunning left the Owls with just two runners on base instead of three,
Arianna Donovan cleaned off the base paths with a two-out two-RBI double.
Brooke Talbot came in to run for Donovan, but didn't hang out at second long as
Brooke Lopez looped a single to right.
WWU wasn't able to continue the rally, but
Sarah Randermann made the lead stick, retiring the Trojans in order to pick up the save.
The Owls continue the AMC road swing, facing off against Missouri Baptist in a 2 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.
