FULTON, Mo. - William Woods (11-4) needed less than 90 minutes to put Sunday's match against Midland University (6-4) in the win column, with
Stepan Mach and
Ben Grumley polishing off Midland's Nathen Bitzer and Boris Velasquez in just 13 minutes at the three doubles line.
Vitek Subert was even swifter than Grumley in singles play, knocking off Arthur Hernandes 6-1, 6-0 at the four singles in 46 minutes.
"The men cleaned up today; this is probably the most complete performance we've had this year and that says a lot because we didn't have one of our top players in the lineup today," said head coach
Chance Joost. "Our men's team is a bit older so they're getting it and starting to click into gear. Now we need to keep it going."
After the blistering start by Mach and Grumley at the three doubles,
Andres De Los Rios Kolejewska and
Felix Diedrichs claimed the doubles point for Woods with a 6-2 win over Vitor Conclaves and Hernandes at the two.
Vaclav Schneider and Subert needed a 7-4 tiebreak win to sweep the doubles point for the Owls, but Woods wasn't severely tested at any of the singles lines. Subert (4 singles, 6-1, 6-0), Grumley (2 singles, 6-2, 6-2) and Schneider (1 singles, 6-3, 6-2) clinched the match inside the first hour of singles play for WWU.
Mach finished off Liebig 7-5, 6-2 at the three line at the 1:25 mark to push WWU's match score to 5-0, with De Los Rios Kolejewska posting the same score at the five line against Bitzer after switching courts and Diedrichs rounding out the sweep 6-3, 6-3 over Velasquez.
The Owls host Ottawa University and former AMC foe Freed-Hardeman to campus on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
