FULTON, Mo. - After sweeping the doubles point and pulling ahead 3-0 with wins at the three and one singles, the Braves managed to sneak in a win at the four line before William Woods (6-6) sealed the match win over Ottawa University (9-4) and finished off with a 5-2 final.
"We're winning and building confidence so that's always good," said head coach
Chance Joost. "There are definitely things to work on and we are but any time you beat a team that's most likely going to be in the national tournament, it's a good day. We'll be ready to go tomorrow!"
Kristina Dimitrijevic and
Sophia Hausner claimed the first win of the match for Woods, rolling to a 6-0 win over Isidora Hrnjak and Lily Keimig, with
Lena Greefs and
Marcelina Kotylak closing out the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Valeria Rodriguez and Priyanshi Sharma.
Greefs dispatched Alejandra Parra Herrera 6-3, 6-0 in less than an hour, with
Hanna Lindeboom downing Hrnjak 6-3, 7-5 at the one singles line to put WWU up 3-0 in the match.
Alexandra Persson kept Ottawa's hopes alive at the four with a seven-game run that saw her battle back from a 5-4 first-set deficit for a 7-5 win and take a 4-0 lead in the second before
Marta Calvo Larraz was able to close to 4-2. Persson won the next two games to claim a point for the Braves 7-5, 6-2.
At the five line, Dimitrijevic slammed the door on the contest less than 20 minutes later though, sweeping over Rodriguez 6-2, 6-2 at five singles with Kotylak shutting out Keimig 6-0, 6-0 at the six.
Sharma was able to earn a consolation point for Ottawa at the two singles, taking Mireira Simon Sanchez to three sets, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2, but only after the match was well in hand.
