FULTON, Mo. - Despite battling back to claim the doubles point with a 6-3 win by
Marcelina Kotylak and
Lena Greefs over Reshma Challarapu and Darija Mladenovic, the physical toll of playing five matches in six days showed its face on Saturday as no. 9 William Woods (3-7) dropped a 6-1 result to no. 12 Lindsey Wilson.
After losing 6-2 at the no. 3 doubles line, the Owls battled back with
Hanna Lindeboom and
Marta Calvo Larraz wrestling a 6-4 win away from Anastasia Vorobiova and Anastasia Ivanchenko with a break point.
Greefs and Kotylak wrapped up the doubles point shortly thereafter with a 6-3 win, sending play to singles with Woods up 1-0. Unfortunately for WWU, Calvo Larraz was forced to retire after falling 7-5 in the first set at the no. 3 singles line, and
Mireia Simon Sanchez wasn't able to hold off Mariangeles Mateu at the 2 line, falling 6-0, 6-2.
Kristina Dimitrijevic battled at 4 singles for Woods, but wasn't able to finish the comeback, dropping the Owls to a 3-1 deficit.
After splitting the first two sets with Vorobiova, Lindeboom battled through the third set at the 1 line while Kotylak and Hausner tried to assemble comebacks against Ivanchenko and Heyka Rodriguez at the 5 and 6 lines respectively, but with LWC coming off a much less demanding schedule, the Owls fell in all three matches.
Woods has a week off before its next competition, taking on NCAA Division I foe SIU-Edwardsville in an exhibition match on Friday, March 15th.
