ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - With the regular season winding down and the Owls looking to sharpen up for postseason play, no. 9(ITA)/11(NAIA) William Woods (15-4) ventured into the NCAA Division II ranks, taking on no. 35 (ITA) Northwest Missouri State on Thursday. Despite the absence of
Ben Grumley, who was wrapping up degree requirements at the WWU Symposium for Research, Scholarship and Creativity, Woods mounted a pair of epic comebacks to earn a 4-3 win.
The first comeback of the afternoon came during doubles action, as
Andres De Los Rios Kolejewska and
Felix Diedrichs claimed a 6-4 win over Rafal Bednarczuk and Vinicius Rodrigues to even the doubles set at 1-1.
Zinovii Nahirniak and
Stepan Mach locked in the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Mason Meier and Martin Sanchez.
Vaclav Schneider and Nahirniak each claimed first set wins at the one and two singles respectively, but wound up facing third-set tiebreakers. Schneider battled close with Andrea Zamurri, ranked 24th in Division II men's singles, but ultimately fell 3-6, 6-1, 11-8. Nahriniak also dropped his tiebreaker set, and Bednarczuk downed Mach 6-3, 6-4 to give the Bearcats a 3-1 match lead.
The first set of the four singles was a back-and-forth battle between
Vitek Subert and Fillipo Piranomonte, but Subert found a hot streak, winning four straight to claim a 6-4 set one win and carry into a 1-0 set two lead. Of the 10 games played in set two, nine ended with service breaks, but Subert held serve when it counted to pull Woods within 3-2.
De Los Rios Kolejewska knotted the match up at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Martin Sanchez, setting up Diedrichs for the heroic finish. With the six-line match tied at 4-4 as the five singles contest came to an end, the freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, rolled off eight straight points to claim the 6-4, 6-0 win and seal the 4-3 upset.
