Owls Extend Shutout Streak to Four Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AFFTON, Mo. - The Owls did their scoring in bunches on Sunday, as William Woods (17-21, 8-6 AMC) shut out UHSP (11-23, 3-11 AMC) 6-0 and 10-0. Ally Mahoney belted a three-run shot in the fourth inning of game one for WWU, her sixth of the season.

Woods managed to get a runner aboard in each of the first three innings in game one, but wasn't able to break through onto the scoreboard until the fourth.

Brooke Lopez opened the inning with a fly ball to left field, with Iliana Manzano striking out to leave WWU with just one out to work with. Back-to-back singles by Rylee Hagens and Arianna Donovan gave Woods a threat, as Hagens made it to third on the single and Donovan was able to move up 60 feet as well. Mahoney didn't leave them standing still for very long, blasting a three-run shot over the fence.

After keeping the Eutectics off the board in the bottom of the fourth, Ella Aguiar led off the fifth with a double for Woods. UHSP's starter Lexi Knoll couldn't corral Sydney Wilbeck's bunt, sending the throw wide of the bag and allowing Aguiar to score and Wilbeck to make it all the way to third. Jessica Keilholz drew a walk and stole second, with Manzano sending a deep triple to left to score Keilholz and Wilbeck.

The Owls weren't able to add to their lead in the sixth or seventh innings, but held on for the win with back-to-back strikeouts for Sarah Randermann, who picked up the complete-game win with 10 strikeouts.

Woods posted crooked numbers to bookend the scoring in game two, with Aguiar reaching to lead off on an error by UHSP shortstop Hunter Noto and Wilbeck following with a single. A sac bunt by Keilholz put runners in scoring position for the Owls, but Lopez was able to draw a walk to load the bases. A one-out Manzano double scored Aguiar and Wilbeck, then a two-out single by Donovan scored Lopez and Manzano.

The Owls ran into a few bumps in the middle innings, as they were held scoreless through the sixth. The bats came to life in the seventh, however, as Brooklynn Spillman led off the inning with a double. It was the first of four consecutive hits for Woods before surrendering an out, with Keilholz ending up on third after her two-RBI single as the UHSP first-baseman misfired on a throw trying to get Wilbeck at third. Lopez grounded out to second, scoring Keilholz.

Woods added two more runs in the inning for a 10-0 lead, then showed off some great defense in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the shutout. After Sydney Hinojosa drew a leadoff walk, she was pinch-run for by Katlyn Akers. Makenzie Ness looped a single into center field, but Hagens was able to fire the ball quickly to Micaiah Cordell, who connected with Spillman to get Akers at third.

The Owls take a brief sojourn out of AMC action on Tuesday, finishing up the home-and-home series with Mission University. First pitch is slated for 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
