Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo. - In what was originally set to be the regular season finale for the Owls, William Woods (18-25, 8-9 AMC) picked up a split with Central Baptist (28-18, 12-4 AMC). WWU's game one comeback fell just short in a 6-5 loss, but
Brooke Lopez crushed a grand slam as her first career home run in a 10-0 five-inning game two win for Woods.
Central Baptist scored three runs in the first inning, but a solid defensive effort limited the damage as Keilholz's throw home was cut off by
Iliana Manzano to catch Lauren Anderson trying to take third on Kori Truelove's sac fly.
The Owls threatened in the bottom of the inning, but ultimately stranded two in the frame.
Woods was able to equalize in the bottom of the third, as a near-perfect bunt by
Sydney Wilbeck jumpstarted a three-run rally for Woods. After a leadoff single by Keilholz, Wilbeck laid down a bunt that left Mustang pitcher Mallory Reynolds the only player with a chance to field it. As the speedy Keilholz rounded third, Reynolds's throw to first was off the mark, allowing Wilbeck to take second. The Owls added two more runs to tie the game at 3-3.
Caroline Byers immediately reclaimed the lead for Central Baptist with a solo shot down the left field line in the top of the fourth, and the Mustangs added two more in the top of the sixth.
After stranding two runners in the bottom of the fifth, the Owls were able to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh, as
Ella Aguiar laced a one-out single through the right side, followed by a Lopez walk. Manzano came tantalizingly close to tying the game as she blasted a shot toward left field, but it held up in the wind and drifted just foul as it crossed the fence.
She still managed to double Aguiar home, with
Addie Rhea earning a pinch-hit walk to load the bases.
Arianna Donovan sent a sac fly deep to center scoring Lopez, but
Ally Mahoney popped out to second to end the comeback attempt.
The tables were decisively turned in game two, as
Sarah Randermann picked up her second complete-game win of the week and delivered her fourth consecutive complete-game start, striking out three and allowing just two hits in five innings of work.
Woods picked up game two where they left off game one, with consecutive singles by Keilholz, Wilbeck and Aguiar loading the bases. With the wind blowing slightly out, Lopez connected on the second pitch of her at-bat and crushed a shot to the Backer West scoreboard beyond the left field fence.
The Owls weren't able to keep the momentum in the first, but after holding CBC off the board in the top of the second, Keilholz blasted a two-out solo shot to left field.
Randermann worked out of trouble in the top of the third, closing the inning with a strikeout after giving up a leadoff single, then her offense put the game well out of reach in the bottom of the frame.
Aguiar led off the inning with a single, moving to second as Lopez hit a slow grounder to first. A single by Manzano scored Lopez, sparking a five-run outburst by Woods.
After retiring the side in order in the top of the fourth, the Owls worked around a bobbled catch by Manzano at short to bring the game to an end after the top of the fifth inning, as Elizabeth Stoufer's hit a sharp grounder right at Brooklyn Spillman, who mad the catch and stepped on third for the final out.
The Owls have one last appearance on the regular season slate, as they travel to Columbia on Thursday to resume game one of their April 7 doubleheader against Stephens. The game was originally declared a forfeit on the field, but following a review by the NAIA National Administrative Council, the forfeit was vacated and the teams will resume the contest from the point of interruption. The result will determine the seeding for the 2024 AMC Softball Tournament, as the Owls and Stars currently have identical 8-9 records in conference play.
