ST. LOUIS, Mo. - William Woods (11-6) found itself briefly in an unfamiliar position on Thursday, as the top-seeded Owls dropped the doubles point to no. 2 seed Missouri Baptist (14-9), but after a rally at the six line by
Marcelina Kotylak, WWU picked up its third straight AMC/Heart/Sooner NAIA Championship Qualifier title with a 4-2 win over the Spartans. Woods claimed the title after a 5-0 win over no. 4 seed John Brown on Wednesday.
After earning a bye to the semifinals, Woods swept over the Golden Eagles in doubles, with
Hanna Lindeboom and
Marta Calvo Larraz wrapping things up first with a 6-1 win over Lin Xin Tan and Abigail Woodring.
Sophia Hausner and
Kristina Dimitrijevic clinched the doubles point moments later with a 6-1 win over Carolina Hillock and Kyla Isaac.
Woods took care of business in the singles, with
Lena Greefs rolling over Woodring 6-0, 6-1 to start the cascade.
As the championship match got underway on Thursday, Greefs and Kotylak picked up the first win of the day for Woods at the two doubles, but Missouri Baptist was able to pick up wins at the one and three lines to take a 1-0 lead.
Missouri Baptist celebrated the doubles win heartily, as Woods had swept all three lines in a regular season meeting between the teams, but the joy was short-lived. The Owls came out fired up in singles action, with Kotylak picking off Mia McIsaac 6-1, 6-2 to level the match at 1-1.
Mireia Simon Sanchez rocketed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Katarina Vasiljkovic to avenge a three-set regular season thriller, and Calvo Larraz swept Mariana Azevedo 6-3, 6-1.
Joceyln Carmody tried to keep Missouri Baptist in contention with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Dimitrijevic, but Greefs punched the Owls' ticket to Mobile with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over Luana Luerson.
Woods returns to the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship for the eighth time in program history. The Owls travel to Mobile, Ala., for the May 14-18 tournament.
