FULTON, Mo. - Although it wasn't originally intended as the team's senior day, Friday's match between William Woods (14-4, 2-0) and Missouri Baptist (12-7, 2-1) proved to be a perfect stage to honor a pair of the best in WWU history. In a rematch of the first varsity home match of the season, Woods claimed the same result in a 7-0 sweep of the Spartans.
Coming into the match, the one doubles was expected to be a dogfight, as
Ben Grumley and
Zinovii Nahirniak entered the match as the no. 2 NAIA pairing in the ITA rankings and Dragan Omcikus and Luca Ebenriter ranked no. 8. The battle lived up to expectations, and even though the doubles point was already decided, Grumley decided to put on a show for the crowd in the 7-5 win. The senior gave the pairing a fifth-game win with a ridiculous shot, going behind the back through the legs with a lob to draw both Omcikus and Ebenriter to the left side of the court for an easy cross-court dump by Nahirniak.
Fellow senior
Vitek Subert and partner
Vaclav Schneider scored the first match win for Woods, downing Timofey and Arkhip Tokmakov 6-2 at the two doubles, with
Andres De Los Rios Kolejewska and
Felix Diedrichs locking in the point with a 6-4 win over Lucas Kzam and Nicolas Sanchez.
The Owls polished off the win quickly, needing just 67 minutes to wrap up straight sets wins at the three, one and two singles lines. Nahirniak went 6-2, 6-1 over Youssef Mokhles at the hour mark, with current NAIA men's singles no. 1 Schneider claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ebenriter in 1:13. After a first game win for Omcikus, Grumley reeled off five straight games in a dominant 6-3, 6-4 win.
Arkhip Tokmakov briefly gave MBU a glimmer of hope, earning a second-set win at the four singles to tie his match at 1-1, but
Stepan Mach closed out the line with a tiebreak 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 win as the overall match was already decided.
The Owls are on the road to close out the regular season, with a Sunday doubleheader. Woods battles McPherson College at 10 a.m., with a matchup between current ITA no. 1 Schneider and NAIA Player of the Week Milan Bucek (no. 42 in the ITA rankings) following at 2 p.m. as the Owls take on Bethel College.
