Box Score COLUMBIA, Mo. - After battling through a tough doubleheader on Saturday, the Owls returned to Columbia looking to carry the momentum from game two. And although the end result was a bit unorthodox, William Woods (13-21, 4-6 AMC) picked up a much-needed AMC sweep over Stephens (14-22, 7-5 AMC) on Sunday. The Owls received a 7-0 forfeit win in game one and earned a 2-1 win in game two.
With the Owls leading 3-1 in the middle of the fifth inning, an illegal substitution by Stephens brought game one to an early end as the umpires declared a forfeit.
After clearing up the confusion, game two got underway with the Stars opening the scoring in the bottom of the first. Ivy Smart drew a two-out walk, with Avery Throckmorton advancing her to second with a single. A double by Gillian Hale scored Smart, but Woods was able to escape the inning with a groundout to second.
After retiring in order in the top of the second and holding Stephens scoreless in the bottom, the Owls knotted the game up at 1-1 in the second.
Ally Mahoney knocked a one-out single up the middle, then took advantage of a passed ball to move to second. A two-out walk by
Ella Aguiar set up Brooklyn Spillman, who took advantage with an RBI single.
The offense went silent for both teams until the sixth inning. Woods opened the top of the frame with back-to-back one-out walks to
Jessica Keilholz and
Brooke Lopez, then moved the runners into scoring position with a double steal. After
Iliana Manzano fouled out to right field, a wild pitch allowed Keilholz to score the go-ahead run.
Stephens mustered a brief threat in the bottom of the sixth, but WWU stranded both of the Stars runners and held on in the seventh for the win.
The Owls are back home on Saturday, April 13, for a Senior Day doubleheader against Harris-Stowe State University. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
