LOUIS, Mo. - A week after a highly successful showing in the ITA Central-West Regionals, No. 8 William Woods University (2-0) beat its second straight NCAA Division II opponent in as many matchplay contests to begin the season, achieving a clean sweep over the University of Missouri-St. Louis (0-1) Sunday at UMSL Tennis Courts.

To begin the matinee matchup, the Owls won two of the three doubles contests to take the doubles point against the Tritons. WWU's Noah Burton and Zino Nahirniak won 6-1 over Percy Siercke and Joan Garros in the one slot, and the Owls' Aoi Ooka and Jesper Seger beat Jose Yanez and Anthony Borrows 6-3 in the three. Winning the Tritons' only matchup, doubles or singles, Tanin Ramnath and Bautista Rooney beat Duarte Melo and Robbie Schorr 6-3 in the two.

William Woods took every set in singles play. The Owls' Nahirniak won 6-2, 6-0 over Siercke in the one spot, Melo 7-6 (won tiebreaker 7-3), 7-5 over Ramnath in the two, Burton 6-2, 6-3 over Garros in the three, Ooka 6-3, 6-0 over Rooney in the four, Seger 6-2, 6-2 over Borrows in the five and Cole Horton 6-4, 6-4 over Yanez in the six.

Sunday's matchup marked the end of WWU's fall matchplay slate. Nahirniak (singles and doubles) and Burton (doubles) compete in the ITA Cup from Oct. 10-13 at Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.
