FULTON, Mo.- The Willliam Woods University Owls (3-1-2) hosted the University of Jamestown Jimmies (1-3-1) on Sunday, besting them by a score of 3-2 in the Owls first game at the new North Campus Athletic Complex.
The Woods notched the scoring column early with an eighth minute goal off the right foot of senior Breck McGrail. The Jefferson City native, playing both sides of the ball, forced a turnover and took it end to end to beat the keeper in a one-on-one. McGrail hammered the shot to the left post past the diving Jimmie keeper for his second goal and sixth point of the season.
The Owls superior defensive front lead by Omar Murillo kept the Jimmies out of scoring position for most of the first half, letting up only one goal in the 28th minute on a deflection that snuck past The Woods' keeper.
William Woods answered this goal with two of their own. Heidelberg, Germany native, David Fink, scored the second goal for the Owls on a tremendous play in the 32nd minute. Fink, from forty yards out, drilled the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net. Omar Murillo was the culprit responsible for the Owls third goal of the game when he scored on an assist from Nico Martinez Labra.
Murillo, a veteran leader of the Owls defensive line, positioned himself five yards away from the goal on a corner kick. Nico Martinez Labra, taking the kick, lofted the ball into the strong right foot of Omar Murillo who blasted it by the Jimmie defense.
The second half was a quiet one for the Owls offense as they did not notch a goal. However, William Woods focused on ball possession and control. The Owls out possessed Jamestown 67% to 33% in the second half. Jamestown took advantage of William Woods' efforts to control the ball and scored their second goal in the 80th minute when Oscar Salgado tapped a ball past the diving keeper.
William Woods is back in action on Friday, September 13th, when they host NCAA Division III opponent Westminster College. Prior to the game on Friday, both institutions agreed to host a costume contest for students to celebrate Friday the 13th.
