Box Score OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Faced with the tall task of No. 1/No. 1 seed Georgia Gwinnett College (3-0), who've won 10 straight NAIA National Championships, host, No. 8/No. 8 seed William Woods University (2-1), lost 4-0 to the Grizzlies in the ITA NAIA Indoor Team Championship quarterfinals Friday at Overland Park Racquet Club.
"The guys really showed up today; the score does not reflect it, but they competed well," William Woods tennis coach
Abigail Lemberger Hughes said. "I was very impressed with the energy they came out with in doubles. I think they have the ability and the tools to really compete hard tomorrow and go for an upset. I'm proud of the guy's attitude and the way they support each other. I'm hoping they show up in the same manner tomorrow, and we can get the result we want."
Georgia Gwinnett earned the doubles point in 29 minutes. The Owls'
Noah Burton and
Robbie Schorr fell 6-3 to Santiago Villarrueal and Jeremias Rocco in the one-slot,
Aoi Ooka and
Jesper Seger were beaten 6-2 by Andoni Garmendia and Aleksandr Kalinin at the two-line and
Cole Horton and
Paulo Lopes Ferreira fell 6-3 to Luis Francisco Sampedro and Kamron McIntosh-Ross at the three.
The Grizzlies secured the sweep in singles with victories at the three through five slots. William Woods' Horton fell 6-1, 6-2 to Villarruel in the three-slot, Seger was defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Franciso Sampedro at the four and Lopes Ferreira lost 6-3, 6-0 to Garmendia at the five.
Despite the loss, the Owls are guaranteed two more matches on the weekend. The Woods plays No. 3/No. 4 seed Middle Georgia State University - upset 4-1 by No. 7/No. 5 seed William Carey University - in the consolation semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
