FULTON, Mo – William Woods University (19-11, 10-8 Heart) closed out its regular season in style, sweeping Mid-America Nazarene (20-7, 14-4 Heart) on Senior Day inside Anderson Arena.
The opening set would be the tone setter for the evening, as both teams traded points in a back-and-forth battle that required extra points to decide. Senior Luciana Pavia Pereira led the charge for the Owls with nine kills, as well as
Ivi Marcolino, who put up seven kills to help the Owls take set one 29-27.
Leading 1-0, the Owls faced early pressure in set two as the Pioneers jumped out to a 10-6 lead. A timely timeout from head coach
Aubrey Wilson shifted the momentum, and the Owls responded with a strong rally. Taking advantage of several Pioneer errors and clutch kills from Pavia Pereira and Marcolino, the Owls pulled away late to win the second set, 25-21.
With the match in their control, the Owls continued to apply pressure in the third.
Roberta Carlos de Silva delivered as she put up 4 kills, and a block would inch the Woods closer to an upset win over the Pioneers. Fittingly, on Senior Day,
Pamela Durazo sealed the match with a kill to complete the 25-18 set win and the 3-0 sweep over the Pioneers.
With the regular season now complete, the Owls turn their attention to the
Heart of America Conference Tournament, where they will face
Missouri Baptist University in the first round. The match date and time are to be announced.
