Owls Use 7th-Inning Comeback to Beat Former AMC Foe Lyon

Box Score BATESVILLE, Ark. - In a matchup of .500 teams, William Woods University (4-3) came back in the seventh inning and gave itself a winning record after beating former American Midwest Conference foe, NCAA Division III Lyon College (2-3) 4-3 Friday at Howard & Mary House Field. Already dealing with some schedule reshuffling, the Owls and Scots were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader at noon but ended up playing one game at 2 p.m., with the second game called in the fourth inning - not long enough for a complete game - due to darkness.

Swinging a hot bat in the cold conditions, William Woods notched a season-high 13 hits (four extra-base hits), received one walk, stole one base and played a flawless game in the field, while Lyon had five hits (two extra-base hits), three walks, one HBP, three stolen bases and no errors.

After giving up a two spot in the bottom of the first, the Owls cut their deficit in half in the top of the third on Jessica Keilholz's RBI single through the left side of the field, plating Brooklynn Spillman, who hit a leadoff triple in the previous at-bat.

Two innings later, William Woods tied it at 2 when Spillman scored the second of her team-high two runs on Sammy Lohnes' two-out two-bagger. The Scots answered the following frame, taking a 3-2 lead on a two-out single down the right-field line a batter after they tripled to begin the two-out rally.

Lyon remained ahead 3-2 through six innings, then the Owls soared back in the seventh. With one out and the bases empty, Brooke Lopez responded in the clutch, blasting a pinch-hit home run to knot it at 3. Then, Lohnes doubled to left-center field and Addie Rhea had a base hit through the third-base side before second-team All-AMC honoree Ella Aguiar put Woods up 4-3 on her single that plated Lohnes.

With no insurance runs to work with, the Owls needed a lights-out frame from Taylor Baumhoer, who went back to the circle for the second inning of her first college relief appearance. As she's already done in her short time with the program, Baumhoer delivered, forcing a 2-3 groundout, striking out the second batter looking and getting the third hitter to fly out to center field to secure a WWU win.

Guiding the Owls' offense, Spillman went 2-3 with a triple, single, stolen base and two runs and Lohnes finished 3-4 with two doubles, one single, one run and one RBI.

Baumhoer (3-1) earned the win, allowing no hits on no runs while striking out two. Keilholz made her first start for WWU on the season, pitching the first five innings and giving up three runs on five hits, three walks and an HBP while punching out two.

The Owls are back at it next weekend when they play four games over two days in the Branson Turfs Up Tournament at Branson RecPlex in Branson. On Day 1, WWU faces Waldorf University (0-3) at 2 p.m. and Dakota Wesleyan University (7-3) at 4 p.m. next Friday.
