Box Score OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Although it ended the competition with a loss, No. 8/No. 8 seed William Woods University (3-2) placed two spots ahead of its seeding after falling 4-0 to No. 9/No. 7 seed University of Northwestern Ohio (2-1) in the ITA NAIA National Team Indoor Championship fifth-place match Sunday at Overland Park Racquet Club.
"The matches today didn't reflect us as a team," William Woods tennis coach
Abigail Lemberger Hughes said. "We are coming off a great win, but unfortunately, a lot of my guys were feeling it physically. We were unable to field the same lineup as the previous day, which would have made a big difference. I do think the guys who had to step up did; they fought and competed hard, but it just didn't go our way. Our challenge for season will be to remain healthy; I think we have a great, deep team overall. I'm excited to see what the guys can do through the rest of semester."
The Racers and Owls had one-sided, back-and-forth doubles matches as UNOH won both to secure the point. No. 2 doubles concluded first, with WWU's
Aoi Ooka and
Jesper Seger losing 6-0 to Francisco Perez and Lucas Grana. Then, the Owls' top duo of
Robbie Schorr and
Noah Burton took Lucas Perez and Nils Messin to a tiebreaker but ultimately fell 7-5.
In singles, UNOH extended its lead to 2-0 early, with The Woods'
Duarte Melo retiring after losing the first set 6-4 to Mete Koseoglu in the one slot. At the three spot, Seger lost 6-1, 6-0 to Lucas Perez, putting the Racers one point away from fifth-place honors. WWU didn't win a team point as UNOH secured the match after
Paulo Lopes Ferreira dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Messin.
William Woods begins its spring season, traveling to NCAA Division II No. 23 Drury University (2-0) at 11 a.m. Feb. 23 at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.
