Box Score PONTIAC, Mich. - Two-time All-American
Vinny DeMarco showed why, netting his second hat trick as an Owl in as many games. Despite that, William Woods University (0-2) dropped a hard-fought match 15-13 to (RV) Siena Heights University (1-0) Saturday at UWM Sports Complex.
"Not the result we were looking for today, but this was a hard-fought game and matched up with this team well," William Woods lacrosse coach
Seth Matlock said. "Needed to clean up a few areas of our game, but the team did everything we asked of them, and they competed well. We came up short of our goal but feel good about the building process. We're starting from the ground up, and today was a building block for our foundation. Go Owls."
The Owls' offense has been consistent over their first two games, and they showed that to a greater extent Saturday by netting seven more goals than their first-ever contest and outshooting the Saints 48 (32 on goal) to 40 (26 on goal).
Outside of DeMarco, who also had two assists, William Woods' offensive effort was guided by
David Wiley with two goals, three assists and a team-high 11 ground balls,
Ethan NewMyer with three goals on 12 shots (tied his college career-high), including eight on goal and
Jack Brackin with two goals and two assists.
From the opening faceoff, the Owls had their attack going, and they made history 4:42 into the game as
Sam Snyder handed The Woods its first-ever lead, scoring off a
David Wiley assist. Wiley turned scorer and doubled the Owls' advantage with 7:52 remaining in the first quarter. Following that, the Saints outscored WWU 4-1 over the next 13:03 to go in front 4-3 early in the second quarter.
The Owls didn't regain the advantage, but they tied the game five times, twice in the first half and three times in the second half. WWU showcased its depth in the goalscoring department, with four players scoring a leveler, including two from NewMyer.
In the first half, the Owls' tying tallies were by Wiley from Brackin's assist at 4-4 with 6:37 left in the second quarter and DeMarco at 5-5 with 3:46 to go in the second. Then, in the second half, WWU knotted it thanks to Snyder at 10-10 with 3:24 remaining in the third and NewMyer at 11-11 with 13:59 and at 13-13 off a Wiley helper with 5:13 on the clock in the fourth.
Giving it his all in to spark an Owls comeback, NewMyer's two goals in the fourth accounted for half of WWU's four points in the fourth. Siena Heights earned the lead it didn't relinquish, 14-13, when it found the back of the net with 3:27 left.
Owls netminder
Drew Stubblefield (0-2) made 11 saves in 26 attempts and was tagged with the loss. WWU notched 36 ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Playing the second match of their two-game, two-day Michigan road trip, the Owls take on (RV) Lawrence Technological University (0-0) at 11 a.m. Sunday at Total Sports Wixom in Wixom.
