CREVE COEUR, Mo. - William Woods Men's Lacrosse traveled to St. Louis for an evening contest against a familiar opponent in the Spartans of Missouri Baptist. Setting the tone early, the Owls created a lead in the first half too great for MBU to overcome, resulting in an 18-16 victory.
Freshman
Joey Weingardt exited the bus with one goal in mind. Unfortunately for the Spartans, their keeper happened to be guarding it. Weingardt singlehandedly put the Owls on the board first with a goal 54 second into the contest. Missouri Baptist would respond, though, netting two shots for their only lead of the game at 2-1.
Then, it was all Woods. Sharing the wealth, five unique Owls comprised the next five goals scored in the game.
Connor White,
Tyler Vansant,
Jack Brackin,
Emmet Mathis, and
Ethan NewMyer spent the end of the 1st period and into the second building a 6-2 lead. Vansant's goal marks the first from the net of his long stick with William Woods.
The contest would go back-and-forth the rest of the way, as the Spartans brought it even at 7's a few seconds before halftime. In the second, it would be the efforts of NewMyer, Brackin and Co. that put William Woods on top for good. The game-sealing goal would come from the net of
Collis Rhodes, carving his way through the Spartan defense to create an 18-14 lead with just 4 minutes left.Â
Scoring a season-high 18 goals, many Owls found their way into the book tonight. NewMyer led all scorers with four. Brackin and White added three, with White assisting two goals as well. Rhodes, Weingardt, and
Jerry Swenson each tallied two. Vansant and Mathis had one a piece.
Rhodes and
Chris Hanson picked up five ground balls each. Rhodes made his impact known in every facet, causing a team-high three turnovers, too. Hanson and Vansant each added two themselves.
Zach Hearn has now earned his first set of back-to-back wins in green and white. The freshman held down the back end, saving eight shots.
After the big win, William Woods Men's Lacrosse stays undefeated in Heart conference play, advancing to 3-5 on the season. Find them in action next against Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan. on Saturday, March 28th at 2 p.m.
