Box Score WIXOM, Mich. -
Vinny DeMarco tallied his third straight hat trick to begin his Wililam Woods University (0-3) career, as the Owls took on another talented team in Michigan this weekend, losing 29-7 to (RV) Lawrence Technological University (1-0) Sunday at Total Sports Wixom.
"Today was a physically demanding game for us," William Woods lacrosse coach
Seth Matlock said. "Playing back-to-back games is always challenging, and we felt the results of that today. Every day, we strive to be better than yesterday, and I think we are testing ourselves to find our identity. We have great leaders on this team but are young in other areas. Connecting those dots will be critical to our success. We will continue to challenge ourselves and work on our shortcomings for the future of this season and beyond. Go Owls!"
In addition to his hat trick, DeMarco had an assist, giving him a team-high four points. He also led WWU in shots (10) and shots on goal (five). Two more Owls joined DeMarco with multi-point displays as
Sam Snyder registered one goal and one assist, and
Jack Brackin slotted in two goals.
William Woods goalie
Drew Stubblefield (0-3) was called to action much more than his counterpart, and he stopped an impressive 13 shots.
A trio of Ottawa University transfers helped create more chances for the Owls' attack:
David Wiley and
Chris Hanson each recorded a co-team-high four ground balls and a caused turnover, and
Loren Woita forced a team-high two caused turnovers.
Thirty seconds into the match, the Blue Devils, opening their 11th campaign, were in front the rest of the way after Grady Holmes' goal, assisted by Ryan Pastorino. Lawrence Tech extended its lead to 3-0 before DeMarco scored WWU's first goal with 12:22 to go in the first quarter. Brackin also found the back of the net in the first for the Owls when they were down a man to put it at 7-2 LTU with 6:21 remaining in the quarter.
The Blue Devils had an 11-2 advantage after one quarter. Brackin wasn't bothered by Woods being a player short, finishing his two-goal performance and posting the Owls' lone goal in the second quarter with 8:02 left. That trimmed William Woods' deficit to 13-3. LTU went on a 5-0 run to end the first half ahead 18-3.
In the third, DeMarco capped his hat trick, getting his second goal with 10:23 left in the quarter and third on a man advantage with :36 remaining.
Ethan NewMyer also got on the scoresheet in the third, taking a Snyder assist and placing his shot past the goalie with 2:00 on the clock.Â
NewMyer's tally began the Owls' best bit of offense, a three-goal unanswered stretch, which occurred late in the third and early in the fourth quarter. Snyder ended the run, posting WWU's second straight man-up goal. That was the Owls' final goal as they trailed 23-7 with 14:12 remaining. Lawrence Tech netted the game's final six scores to take the matchup by 22.
Maybe playing its second contest in two days played a factor, but after outshooting (RV) Siena Heights University yesterday, WWU was outshot 51 (42 on goal) to 24 (13 on goal) by LTU. However, the Owls were more clinical in their extra-man opportunities, going 2-3 compared to the Blue Devils' 5-9.
William Woods has over three weeks to prepare for its next game, its Heart of America Athletic Conference opener against (RV) Saint Ambrose University (0-1), at 3 p.m. March 19 at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport, Iowa. In the Heart preseason coaches' poll, the Owls were ranked fifth with 46 votes, while the Bees were selected third with 61.
