Owls Drop Two at Branson Turf’s Up Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRANSON, Mo. - With spring weather making its way to Missouri Monday after a chilly weekend, William Woods University (4-5) played two in the Branson Turf's Up Tournament, losing 6-1 to Bethany College (3-4) and 7-4 to NCAA Division II Southwest Baptist University (4-6) at Branson RecPlex.

"Disappointing day for sure," William Woods softball coach Tracy Gastineau said. "We never really got going in Game 1, so it was hard to get any momentum. Game 2 was tough. Had the lead with quality at-bats early but didn't maintain that, and you have to play all seven. Glad to be outside and getting games in, but need to start using those game experiences as tools to learn each time out."

Taking on the Swedes of Bethany in Game 1, the Owls of William Woods had six hits (one extra-base hit - a double), received one walk and no errors. BC also didn't have an error and recorded 11 hits (five extra-base hits - three doubles and two home runs) and three walks.

Bethany plated one run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single to left field, one in the third on an RBI double to left center, two in the fifth on a two-run home run over the fence in left and two in the seventh on a round-tripper to center.

Down 6-0 in its final frame at the plate, William Woods began its half of the seventh how it wanted, with Ella Aguiar drilling a leadoff double to left center. Aguiar advanced to third on a groundout to second base, then she scored on Taylor Lorenz's base hit to right field. Despite hitting the ball into the outfield, the Swedes forced the following two Owls into flyouts as WWU fell by five runs.

Owls freshman Taylor Baumhoer (3-2) went all seven innings, striking out nine and giving up six runs as she took the loss.

Turning around and facing the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist in Game 2, the Owls notched six hits (one extra-base hit - a triple), seven walks and five errors. SBU posted nine hits (three extra-base hits - two triples and a double), two walks, one HBP and three errors.

Emmy Blevins put William Woods in front 1-0 in the top of the third, slapping a two-out single up the middle to drive in Addie Rhea from third base. That was the Owls' only hit in the third, and the Bearcats had two hits (single and double) in the bottom half, plating a run each from them to hold a 2-1 lead after three innings.

The Owls responded in the following frame, taking a 3-2 lead on Sammy Lohnes' triple to right center, bringing Corynne Miller home. Lohnes scored an insurance run in the next at-bat as Rhea singled to right center. That ended up being WWU's final run.

Southwest Baptist narrowed its deficit to 4-3 in the fifth on a RBI single to right field, then took its game-deciding lead in the sixth on a two-RBI triple to right center. The Owls committed two errors in the sixth, including one that allowed the Bearcats to tie it, and the SBU batter that reached on that play scored in its lead-changing at-bat. Taking the field in the top of the seventh up 7-4, the Bearcats sent WWU down 1-2-3 to take the game.

Allowing just two earned runs and punching out two, Owls starter Sarah Randermann (1-3) threw all six innings and was tagged with the loss.

William Woods will be back in Fulton to face crosstown, NCAA Division III Westminster College (0-2) in a home-opening doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday at Backer Sports Complex.
