Owls’ Burgher Wins Men’s 800 at Jim Green Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Oshawi Burgher earned his second gold medal for William Woods University, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute and 58.02 seconds in the Jim Green Invitational, hosted by NCAA Division III Illinois College Saturday at King Fieldhouse.

"Today was a good day, a little preview for conference, and I am feeling good about our chances on the men's side," William Woods track and field coach Anthony Stockton said. "We had some stand-out performances and young men who are one small fix away from some monster performances."

Close behind Burgher, Blaine Brodersen took third in the 800 run at a personal record 1:59.34, the second-fastest NAIA time among the field. Rounding out the trio of Owls medalists in track events, Ian Schwierjohn received bronze in the one-mile run, reaching the finish line in 4:29.02.

William Woods brought home a pair of bronze medals in relay events. Those relay squads were the Owls' distance medley team of Gabriel Soest, Wyatt Martin, Tanner Gillaspy and Justus Yates (11:26.5) and their 4x400-meter relay group of Angel Lottie, Soest, Burgher and Brodersen (3:34.66).

Last but not least, the Owls recorded two top-six finishes in the 400 dash: Lottie placed fifth at 52.63 and Demario Wright sixth at 52.81.

Seeking its first conference title in nine years and fifth overall, William Woods competes in its last American Midwest Conference Indoor Championships at 10 a.m. next Saturday at Coach Crafton Center in Elsah, Illinois. The Owls will also look to add to their 69 individual and relay conference champions tally.
