Keilholz Shatters Career 3s Record, #6 seed WWU Loses to #3 seed MU in AMC QFs

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - Katie Keilholz broke the program's career 3-pointers record with 233, and Sydney Booker posted her 10th double-double on the season in her final game as an Owl with 10 points and 10 rebounds as No. 6 seed William Woods University's (11-18) season ended with a 94-67 defeat to No. 3 seed Mission University (22-5) in the American Midwest Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Presented by TandemHR quarterfinals Friday at Southerland-Mabee Center.

Playing its second straight game against the Patriots, the Owls had three players score in double figures. Joining Booker, who also had two assists, one block and one steal, were Jersee Wren with a team-high 16 points (5-14 field goals, 5-6 free throws and one 3-pointer), four boards, one assist and one block and Peyton Dearing with 10 points (2-4 3-pointers), three rebounds and one assist.

Also standing out for The Woods were India Atkins with eight points, three boards, a team-high three assists, two blocks and two steals, and Mariah Prince with six rebounds, four points, a team-high three steals and two assists.

The Owls allowed five points to begin the contest. Then, Wren, assisted by Booker, made a 3-pointer to cut the game to two. That was the closest Woods got to Mission in the first quarter as the Patriots led 21-9 through 10 minutes.

William Woods battled back, beginning the second quarter on an 11-4 run to narrow its deficit to five points (25-20). During that stretch, Wren scored three points from a free throw and a layup, Keilholz tied the Owls' career 3-pointer record with her make off the bench and Dearing capped the run with a triple.

After the Patriots furthered their advantage to seven points, the Owls used a 9-2 run to tie it at 31. In that game-tying stretch, Keilholz swished in her record-breaking 233rd career 3-pointer, and Prince converted two free throws to knot it for WWU. Unable to take the lead, the Owls allowed the Patriots to outscore them 8-2 to end the first half as Mission led 39-33 at halftime.

Starting the second half how it wanted, William Woods put up four unanswered points on a Wren inside basket and Booker jumper to cut it to a 39-37 deficit. But, the Patriots took control and outscored the Owls 24-5 to hold a 63-44 advantage with 3:42 to go in the third quarter. Mission elevated its lead to 67-47 on the final bucket of the third quarter.

Unable to overcome the large deficit, William Woods played a tighter fourth quarter, getting outscored 27-20 by the Patriots as it fell by 27 points.

The Owls pulled down 33 rebounds (14 offensive) with 11 second-chance points, tallied 15 points off 14 forced turnovers and shot 33.3% (20-60) from the field, 33.3% (6-18) from 3-point range and 77.8% (21-27) from the free-throw line. The Patriots collected 40 boards (10 offensive) with 13 second-chance points, scored 20 points off 14 forced turnovers and made 58.5% (38-65) from the field, 42.9% (9-21) from deep and 75% (9-12) at the stripe.

Friday marked the end of five William Woods players' careers: Atkins, Dearing, Booker, Keilholz and Ruthie Brown.

Of those Owls, two put their names into the WWU record book: Keilholz surpassed Peyton Greenlee's 232 career 3-pointers (2016-20) to put herself at the top of the leaderboard with 233, while Booker is the most recent of 27 to score 1,000 points in green and white, with 1,417 career points, eighth most on the table and her 1,005 career rebounds are the second most all-time.

In their final season in the AMC, the Owls had two more conference wins than last year with nine. William Woods will join rival Missouri Baptist University in moving from the AMC to the Heart of America Athletic Conference next school year.
