Owls End Busy 5-Game Weekend on 6-Game Winning Streak

FULTON, Mo. - Capping off its action-packed five-game weekend on a six-game winning streak, William Woods University (6-3) shut out its third opponent in as many days with its 13-0 victory over Campbellsville University (4-4) and after the Owls returned their first-ever pick-6 in that game, they recorded two more pick-6s in their 32-6 triumph over NJCAA Pratt Community College (1-6) Sunday at North Campus Athletic Complex.

The Owls of William Woods started their first game against the Tigers of Campbellsville at noon Sunday - a standard time for NFL contests to kick off. And in that matchup, Jayden Jalbert looked like she could be in the NFL, adding her name to the WWU record book in a big way, clearing the entire 80-yard field when she posted the Owls' first-ever pick-6.

Evonne Bruestle also had a tremendous defensive game. She registered a game-high three sacks for a total loss of 18 yards, which accounted for three of her co-team-high seven tackles. The freshman from Las Vegas also added a pass breakup and had seven receptions for 47 yards on the offensive side.

Kennedy Vannoy exemplified yet again the two-way play of women's flag football, breaking WWU's single-game rushing yards record with one carry for 21 yards - covered just over a quarter of the field on that rush - caught three passes for 27 yards and had a co-team-high seven tackles.

The Owls scored in the second quarter of every matchup through four home games. They did it in both games Sunday to make it six straight times. WWU tallied 13 points against Campbellsville in the second quarter.

Jalbert's exciting, unbreakable - tough to repeat - 80-yard pick-6 gave WWU the game-deciding lead with 51 seconds left in the second quarter. Makenzie Hicks converted the 1-point pass attempt, putting the Owls ahead 7-0.

With a running clock until the final 2:00 of each half, those two minutes can feel like an eternity compared to the rest of the game. And the Owls utilized that impressively, scoring 13 points in 42 seconds after Hicks threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Olivia Perkins with 9 seconds to go in the second quarter.

That would be all the scoring William Woods needed on a chilly afternoon, locking it down on the defensive side to pitch its third shutout victory on the weekend.

For the game, the Owls totaled 138 yards of offense (120 passing yards and 18 rushing yards), scored one pick-6 and one passing touchdown, intercepted one pass for an 80-yard return and had no penalties. The Tigers tallied 87 yards of offense (97 passing yards and -10 rushing yards), intercepted one pass for a 26-yard return and were called for two penalties for a 5-yard loss in total.

To cap off its successful weekend, William Woods broke or tied school records in all three phases of the game - offense, defense and special teams - against the Beavers of Pratt. Offensively, Hicks reset WWU's school record in attempted carries with six. Defensively, Vannoy (65 total return yards and two pick-6s) and Addie Chilek (seven total return yards) tied the single-game interception record with two picks; it was Chilek's second two-interception game and Vannoy's first. On special teams, Madi Jones broke the Owls' punting average record with a 48.5-yard average in two punts, including a 69-yard boom for the program's longest punt.

Jones' punt occurred before the Beavers' opening possession, which resulted in a three-and-out. WWU scored the game's first points on its ensuing drive when Hicks found Vannoy for a 4-yard touchdown pass, then converted the 1-point pass attempt.

The Owls led 7-0 through one quarter, and they added to their lead in the second quarter - on Pratt's first possession of the quarter. Reaching the end zone for the second time, Vannoy intercepted a Beavers pass and took it to the house for a 35-yard pick-6 with 9:16 left in the second. Hicks increased WWU's advantage to 19-0, completing a 25-yard touchdown toss to Perkins with 31 seconds remaining in the second. Less than a second until halftime, Pratt avoided getting shutout, recording a 3-yard touchdown pass.

In the third quarter, Vannoy notched her second pick-6 of the game, a feat that's a program first, returning it 30 yards to the end zone to extend the Owls' lead to 26-6 after the 1-point conversion.

Vannoy put the bow on an elite performance by scoring in all three phases thanks to her 35-yard punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter, evading more than a few Beavers to reach pay dirt.

In Game 2, William Woods totaled 69 yards of offense (81 passing yards and -12 rushing yards), scored two passing touchdowns, two pick-6s and one punt return touchdown, intercepted a single-game record six passes for 77 return yards in total and had two penalties for 20 yards. Pratt registered 136 yards of offense (133 passing yards and three rushing yards), scored one passing touchdown, intercepted two throws and posted one penalty for 10 yards.

The Owls (4-3 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) will wrap up their seven-game homestand, facing a familiar foe among most of their women's athletic programs, Cottey College (1-4, 1-4 KCAC) in a KCAC matchup at 3 p.m. on March 26.
