LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - William Woods Flag Football was set for a rematch against the University of Saint Mary, this time on the home field of the Spires. After defeating USM in their first appearance, earning a KCAC victory, it was Saint Mary that claimed the non-conference game two of the season series, 25-6.
The Owls struggled to find any consistency on offense throughout the match. The passing game, led by quarterback
Shamya Williams, totaled just 96 yards and the sole touchdown for the Woods' attack.
Sam Menard was the player of the receiving end of the touchdown pass, one of her three receptions for 23 yards on the day. Her sister,
Olivia Menard, led the Owls' receiving group with six catches for 48 yards.
Williams was under pressure all game by the Spires pass rush, getting sacked nine times. Besides the impact on passing capability, it resulted in a net -44 rushing yards for William Woods.
On the other side of the ball, the defense of the Owls held Saint Mary to a reasonable total of 25.
Sam Menard was a catalyst for this outcome, sacking the Spires' quarterback four times for a loss of 23 yards. The sophomore also added another tackle for loss and two pass breakups, displaying her well-rounded talents.
A'Jah Smith and
Meredith Ernst each pulled a team-high six flags, and
Anye Glasper contributed a tackle for loss and pass breakup as well.
The Spires' offensive success came from a variety of sources, passing for 114 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 79 yards and a pair of scores.
The women drop to 4-7 on the season and look to finish strong in their penultimate contest against Rockford University in Fulton on Saturday, April 18th at 11 a.m.
