Thomas Geukemeijer won his singles and doubles matchups in only his second college tennis match as No. 12 Wiliam Woods University (4-3) beat Freed-Hardeman University (2-4) 5-2 to give itself a winning record Sunday at Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex.
"The guys managed to get the win 5-2 and overall competed well," William Woods tennis coach
Abigail Lemberger Hughes said. "If we can lock in and be more disciplined, I expect to have some good results next week on the road."Â
Geukemeijer and
Lars Ankerman gave the Owls the start they wanted, taking the first doubles matchup to conclude 6-1 at the three line.
Aoi Ooka and
Jesper Seger secured the doubles point for WWU, winning 7-5 at the two slot. The Lions recorded their only doubles win at the top position as the Owls'
Noah Burton and
Robbie Schorr fell 7-6.
Burton, ranked 40th in the latest ITA NAIA singles rankings, followed that up with a win in singles, doubling Woods' lead with his 7-5, 0-0 victory at the one line. In the No. 3 singles matchup,
Cole Horton extended the Owls' advantage to 3-0 by winning 6-4, 6-4. FHU narrowed its deficit to 3-1 as Ooka lost 7-5, 6-3 at the two slot. The Lions edged closer, narrowing it to a one-point WWU lead after Seger dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision at the four line. Geukemeijer finished his tremendous performance by securing the Owls' team win, achieving a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the six spot. Schorr added Woods' fifth and final point, winning 6-0, 4-6 (1-0) at the five.
The Owls play four matches in the TXWES Steve Foster Invitational next weekend, starting with Kansas Wesleyan University (1-2) at 8 a.m. and Lewis-Clark State College (4-5) at 4 p.m. Friday at Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.Â
