Brumley Becomes Owls’ First National Qualifier, Earns HM All-HAAC

OSKALOOSA, Iowa - In Year 2, William Woods University advanced its first grappler to nationals as Mariyah Brumley (207 pounds) placed third and earned honorable mention All-Heart of America Athletic Conference in the Heart Women's Wrestling Conference Championship, hosted by No. 3 William Penn University Saturday at Penn Activity Center.

"We had a tough day in the toughest conference in the country, in my opinion," William Woods wrestling coach Jacob Lorentz said. "We grew a lot this season, and we are excited for Mariyah as she represents William Woods for the first time ever at nationals. Teani becoming the Woods' first two-time placer, along with some valuable mat time, against that competition, we are excited for next season. We have to continue to put in the work, and the results will begin to show more. I'm proud of our efforts this season."

Brumley (16-3), ranked 19th in the NAIA at 207, scored a team-best 15½ points from two pins. After receiving a bye in Round 1, Brumley pinned (RV) Central Methodist University's Christina Page (15-13) in 25 seconds in the quarterfinals. Taking her only loss to the top-ranked heavyweight in the nation, Brumley fell by a 5:44, 11-0 technical fall-1½ against No. 2 Grand View University's Olivia Brown (13-0). Receiving a bye in the consolation semifinals and advancing straight to the third-place bout, Brumley won by a 4:16 pinfall over the same foe she already beat, CMU's Page.

Teani Medeiros-Maielua (131) also achieved a program first, the first Owl to be a two-time placer. Taking sixth, Medeiros-Maielua (12-15) tallied seven points from a pin, defeating the Eagles' Corinne McClure (15-12) in 58 seconds in Consolation Round 3.

On the team leaderboard, William Woods placed seventh out of seven teams with 23½ points.

With the chance to add more to the WWU record book, Brumley competes on Day 1 of the Third Annual NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship on March 14 at Park City Arena in Park City, Kansas.
