Box Score

FULTON, Mo. - Playing the second contest of its three-match week at Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex, No. 17 William Woods University (8-5) swept the three doubles matchups and eked out a 4-3 victory over McPherson College (7-6) Friday.

"The guys got another great win today for the team," William Woods tennis coach Abigail Lemberger Hughes said. "I'm hoping to follow it up with another win tomorrow in our home conference opener. Go Owls!"

Picking up the doubles point in just 41 minutes, the Owls' Cole Horton and Paulo Lopes Ferreira won 6-2 over the Bulldogs' Texas Ranger Schmidt and Balazs Temesvari at the three slot, Aoi Ooka and Jesper Seger beat McPherson's Arthur Nardy and Simon Delgadillo 6-4 at the two line and Noah Burton and Robbie Schorr beat MC's Celien Botlan and Oscar Brouwer 6-1 at the top position.

The Bulldogs tied it at 1 when Botlan won 7-5, 6-2 over Ooka, ranked 71st in the latest ITA NAIA men's tennis singles rankings, in No. 3 singles.

Horton brought the Owls back in front 2-1, earning a 7-5, 6-2 upset over Brouwer, ranked 63rd, at the two spot. Thomas Geukemeijer gave Woods a two-point lead, winning 7-5, 6-3 over Jayson Wasserfuhr at the four line.

McPherson cut its deficit to 3-2 after Burton, ranked 41st, fell 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to Nardy at the top position.

Denying the Bulldogs' comeback and sealing an Owls victory, Seger prevailed 6-2, 6-4 over Delgadillo at the five line.

In the final matchup to conclude, Schorr lost 4-6, 6-2 to McPherson's Temesvari at the six slot.

William Woods (1-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference) has its second match in as many days, hosting Missouri Valley College (3-3, 0-0 Heart) in its Heart home opener at noon on Saturday. The Owls are 12-1 in the matchup's all-time series - WWU won the last 12 meetings - and took the most recent 6-1 over the Vikings on March 16, 2024, in Marshall.
