FAYETTE, Mo. - With strong performances all around, William Woods University had five medalists, including a first-place showing in the javelin by
Isiah Craighead in the CMU Invite, hosted by future conference opponent Central Methodist University from Friday to Saturday at Davis Field & Hairston Track.
Craighead, a freshman who was a multi-sport standout at Callaway County high school, North Callaway, recorded his first college win, hurling the javelin 51.35 meters (168 feet and 5 inches). That wasn't the Owls' only excellent result in the javelin as they had two more medalists:
Wyatt Martin placed fourth at 48.16m (158-0) and
Tanner Gillaspy in fifth at 43.16m (141-07).
On the track side, William Woods'
Justus Yates finished fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a new personal best of 4 minutes and 14.56 seconds, and
Ethan Wilson placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 1:58.92.
"This weekend was a strong performance across the board," William Woods track and field assistant coach
Gregory A. Keeler said. "I was very impressed with how strong our 400m runners were across the board, with Demario breaking the 50-second barrier, which seemed to have a positive effect on the other runners. Along with the 400 runners, I would have to say
Justus Yates' run in the 1,500 was a true highlight of the weekend. And of course, Isiah's first college win in the javelin set the tone for the rest of the team."
Putting in wonderful, personal record times in sprint events for the Owls were
Demario Wright (49.61),
Oshawi Burgher (50.25), Gillaspy (52.41) and
Gabriel Soest (52.04) in the 400 dash, and
Brady Musgrove (22.64), Martin (24.33) and
Keeley DiBlasi (24.12) in the 200.
William Woods looks to keep up its exceptional showings when it competes in the Lincoln Open, hosted by NCAA Division II Lincoln University next Saturday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium.
