"It was a joy to celebrate our amazing seniors last night," William Woods tennis coach
Abigail Lemberger Hughes said. "The girls stepped away with a 7-0 conference win after an amazing night of memories."
Before the rare nighttime match got underway - the Owls and Vikings were initially scheduled to play during the day on Sunday - William Woods honored its seniors, including three women's players, Hausner, Kowalke and Lindeboom, and two women's graduate assistants,
Marta Calvo and
Ivett Castaneda.Â
Lemberger Hughes expressed what each of her seniors gave to the program.
Hausner: "Sophia brings a lot of fun and energy to the courts. She always has her teammates laughing, and that is something I will miss being around. Her tennis has come a long way, and she is a powerhouse on the court when she puts her mind to it. Sophia is the type of teammate you hope to have on your team, and I will miss having her around."
Kowalke: "Allison is a great teammate and one of the most thoughtful people I know. Whenever there is a match, she is the first one to be supporting her teammates. Even around her busy schedule, she always makes time to be there for the team, and I will miss having her around. I know Allison will be very successful and help a lot of people with the career path she is going into!"
Lindeboom: "Hanna's list of accomplishments speaks for itself; she is one of the most talented players we have had at William Woods in the women's program. Every year, 'Boom' has shown what it means to be an Owl, through her determination on the courts to her frieindships she has made off the court. Her talent, leadership and friendship will be missed dearly, but we know she will be successful in whatever she chooses to do next!"
Calvo: "Marta is always willing to help in whatever capacity is required. I am so glad that we were able to keep her for another year in a coaching capacity. Having coaches who understand the culture and the level of the team makes my job much easier. Marta has been at William Woods for five years and has played a huge role in building the women's program to where it is now. I cannot thank Marta enough for all her help, hard work and knowledge she has brought to the team. Marta will be very successful in her career, back home in Madrid."
Castaneda: "I have had the opportunity to work with Ivett for two years, and it has been nothing more than fun. Ivett has worked tirelessly with both the men's and women's teams over the two years. Her experience and level she has brought to William Woods has only added to the team's competitiveness and success. I am so glad that Ivett chose to join William Woods for her graduate degree. Ivett is now one of my good friends, and I am so glad she is staying local! She will be successful in whatever career she chooses to pursue."
For the first time in a month, the Owls play away from home. They will face Heart rival (RV) Missouri Baptist University (7-5, 1-0 Heart) at 2 p.m. April 9 at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.
