#12 Owls Sweep Kansas Wesleyan, Drop Tight Decision to Lewis-Clark State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARLINGTON, Texas - Robbie Schorr and Jesper Seger won both of their singles and doubles matchups as No. 12 William Woods University (5-4) swept Kansas Wesleyan University (1-3) 7-0 before dropping a tight 4-3 decision to Lewis-Clark State College (5-7) in the TXWES Steve Foster Invitational Friday at Arlington Tennis Center.

"Our guys started the day strong, securing a 7-0 win against Kansas Wesleyan," William Woods tennis coach Abigail Lemberger Hughes said. "They then had a tough evening, having to play a second match the same day. It started well, and the guys were confident, but fatigue definitely set in, and we took a tough loss in the end. The guys will rest up, and then I expect them to come out swinging Sunday against some more fierce competitors."

The Owls took just under two hours to secure all three doubles and all six singles wins against the Coyotes Friday morning.

In doubles, William Woods' No. 3 duo of Lars Ankerman and Thomas Geukemeijer shut out KWU's Jacob Phelps and Benjamin Cechak 6-0, then Noah Burton and Schorr followed with a 6-0 victory over Adam Hanson and Luke Craft at the one line to give the Owls the doubles point. Aoi Ooka and Seger secured the third and final doubles win for WWU, winning 6-3 over the Coyotes' Raul Davalos and Paul Jittawait at the two slot.

No. 1 singles player Burton, ranked 40th in the latest ITA NAIA singles rankings, picked up the Owls' first singles point, defeating Davalos 6-3, 6-3 before his doubles partner Schorr won 6-2, 6-0 over Gavin Chavez at the five slot. Geukemeijer handed The Woods its match-deciding point, beating William McMurry 6-4, 6-4. Finishing off the Owls' clean slate of wins, Seger won 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 over Craft at the three, Paulo Lopes Ferreira took a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Jack Hanson at the six and Ooka defeated the KWU competitor's brother, Adam Hanson 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at the two.

In a much longer contest that lasted nearly six hours, William Woods battled the Warriors point for point, ultimately losing by a point.

Burton and Schorr got the Owls off to the right start in doubles, winning 6-4 over Lewis-Clark State's Pablo Herrera Serna and Giacomo Moreira at the top position. Ooka and Seger locked down the doubles point for WWU, beating the Warriors' Alvaro Camino and Cesar Coloma 6-3. In the final doubles matchup to conclude, Woods' Ankerman and Geukemeijer lost 7-6 (15-13) to LCSC's Juan Pablo Naranjo and Austin Swing.

The Warriors tied it at 1 after Oooka lost 2-6, 6-4, 2-1 to Moreira in No. 2 singles, but Schorr brought the Owls back in front 2-1 by beating LCSC's Gautam Balakrishnan 6-4, 6-2 at the five. Knotting it at 2, WWU's Lopes Ferreira fell 6-3, 6-3 to Coloma at the six before Seger gave the Owls their final lead, 3-1, with his 6-4, 6-2 victory at the four. Unable to prevail in either long matchup, the Warriors completed their comeback, winning the two remaining singles matchups: Burton lost 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 to Herrera Serna at the one, and Geukemeijer was defeated 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 by LCSC's Nell Rollin at the three.

After a break from matchplay Saturday, William Woods finishes play in the TWES Steve Foster Invitational, facing No. 10 Our Lady of the Lake University (9-1) at 8 a.m. and host Texas Wesleyan University (4-3) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
