Thomas Geukemeijer's 2-hour and 11-minute three-set singles victory sealed No. 17/No. 1 seed William Woods University's (13-8) thrilling 4-3 reverse sweep over No. 4 seed Missouri Valley College (6-7) in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships semifinals Friday at Plaza Tennis Center.
"The guys started slow, it had been a long day of waiting around, and you could see that as the energy was slightly off during doubles," William Woods tennis coach
Abigail Lemberger Hughes said. "After losing the doubles point and some singles, our guys really dug deep and fought to claim the singles we needed to make it through to the finals. I was impressed with their grit. Overall great win."
The Owls and Vikings battled from start to finish, and it took three matchups to decide the doubles point. WWU's
Noah Burton and
Robbie Schorr lost 6-2 to MVC's Alecson Adriano Deschamps Junior and Alex Ballinger at the top position in the first contest to conclude. Then, Woods's
Aoi Ooka and
Jesper Seger pushed it to a decisive third matchup after they beat the Vikings' Marc Bueso and Alvaro Ruiz 6-4 at the two line. Unable to complete the comeback, the Owls dropped the doubles point, with Geukemeijer and
Cole Horton dropping a 6-4 decision to Valentin Laser and Bogdan Zakharov at the three.
Missouri Valley increased its lead to 3-0, a point from picking the team win, following Seger's 6-3, 6-2 loss to Ballinger at the five slot and Horton's 6-4, 6-0 defeat to Adriano Deschamps Junior at the two line.
Soaring to the ultimate come-from-behind victory, the Owls won the four remaining singles contests: WWU's Ooka beat Ruiz 6-4, 6-3 at the three spot, Burton, ranked 35th in the latest ITA NAIA men's tennis singles rankings, prevailed 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 over Ruslan Anurev Olegovich at the top line, Schorr earned a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Laser, ranked 75th, at the six slot and Geukemeijer finished off Woods's win with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Bueso at the four.
William Woods will take on archrival (RV)/No. 2 seed Missouri Baptist University (16-6) as it seeks to become the Heart's first-ever men's tennis champion at 10 a.m. Saturday. In their regular-season meeting on April 9, the Owls took a tight 4-3 decision over the Spartans in St. Louis.
