Box Score FULTON, Mo. - William Woods University (1-2) concluded nonconference play, dropping a tight 1-0 decision to crosstown, NCAA Division III Westminster College (1-1) Tuesday at Blue Jay Field at Kent and Judith Mueller Stadium.
"Overall, we came out flat in the first half and lacked ideas going forward," William Woods Director of Soccer Tommy Nienhaus said. "Our speed of play wasn't where we expected it to be. The second-half response was much better. In the end, we couldn't quite get the goal that we needed.
"Hats off to Westminster for making the game ugly, and a well-deserved win."
The Owls had the majority of the attacking chances, outshooting the Blue Jays 14 (10 on goal) to nine (six on goal).
Tess Roberts (69 minutes of play) and
Charley Luczak (28 minutes) guided Woods' attack with three shots (two on goal) apiece.
Westminster netted the contest's lone goal in the 58th minute. Following that, William Woods put five shots on target, Roberts leading the way with two in that time, but the Owls couldn't find their leveler.
WWU goalkeeper
Sierra Hahn made three saves in 90 minutes between the posts.
Next up, the Owls face No. 18 Central Methodist University (1-1-1) in their first-ever Heart of America Athletic Conference match at 5 p.m. Saturday at Davis Field & Hairston Track in Fayette, Mo.
