FAYETTE, Mo.- William Woods University Owls women's soccer team (1-3, 0-1 HAAC) suffered their second consecutive loss and first conference defeat in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC), falling to No. 21-ranked Central Methodist University (3-1-1, 1-0 HAAC) with a final score of 6-1.
Central Methodist opened scoring in the fourth minute with a goal by Sara Garcia, assisted by Mariana Barreto. The Eagles extended their lead in the 15th minute when Barreto scored on a cross-field pass, sending the ball into the top left corner of the net.
William Woods recorded two shots on goal during the first half, both of which were saved by the CMU goalkeeper. Despite multiple opportunities, the Owls were unable to convert, due in part to the strong defensive effort and goalkeeping by Central Methodist. William Woods' starting goalkeeper, Sierra Hahn, registered six saves in the first 45 minutes, though CMU scored three times in the half.
Central Methodist maintained their offensive momentum in the second half, adding a fourth goal in the 47th minute and a fifth in the 63rd minute. Laura Andress secured her first goal of the season in the 74th minute, bringing the Eagles to a 6–0 lead.
The Owls responded with their only goal of the match in the 78th minute. Newcomer Laura DeVries' shot was deflected by the CMU goalkeeper, and veteran Sam Poehlmann capitalized on the rebound to score. The Eagles notched one more goal in the game to cement their 6-1 victory.
Hahn concluded the match with 10 total saves in 73 minutes of play.
The Owls will return to action on Wednesday evening for their first home conference matchup against Baker University. The women's match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m., both hosted at the North Campus Athletic Complex.
