OSKALOOSA, Iowa— In the first half of the Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader, Woods women's soccer (4-6-1, 2-5-1 Heart) earned a 1-1 draw with William Penn (5-5-2, 2-4-2 Heart). The Owls fell behind early but found an equalizer in the second half to secure the draw.
Penn's offense opened with a shot on goal just 50 seconds into play. Owls keeper Sierra Hahn collected the attempt for her first save of the match. Hahn turned away four more shots before the Statesmen found the back of the net. Amerie Osorio lofted a pass from the far side of the box to Hadley Wolfe on the near side. The pass drew Hahn off her line, giving Wolfe enough space to score the opening goal.
WWU's Olivia Menard and Megan Hughes each tested the Penn keeper but were turned away. The Statesmen carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Both teams generated shots on goal early in the second half but were denied by strong play between the posts. Woods earned a corner kick in the 50th minute that presented an opportunity to level the match. However, the Statesmen backline disrupted the scoring chance and quickly transitioned upfield to set up a shot on goal. Hahn came up with another save, collecting the attempt in a one-on-one situation.
On the counterattack, the Owls found their equalizer. Hughes, a senior from Maryland Heights, Mo., fired a shot past the keeper for her fourth goal of the season. Neither team found a winner in the closing minutes, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Hahn recorded a season-high nine saves against the Statesmen attack. Menard, Hughes and Ray Laster each put a shot on target for the Owls, with Hughes providing the equalizer.
Woods returns to the North Campus Athletic Complex on Tuesday night for a matchup against the nationally ranked Central Methodist Eagles.
