Road Toughness Prevails as the Owls End Swept in Kansas

OTTAWA, Kan. - Owls Softball traveled down I-70 and beyond to compete in a doubleheader against the Braves of Ottawa University. The offense struggled to get rolling in either contest, causing William Woods to come home 0-2 from the series.

Despite what would inevitably be a barren day at the plate, the Owls found themselves in the driver's seat early into the top of the 1st of game one. Senior leadoff batter Lexi Lewis did as she does best, getting on base, in this case through a base on balls. WWU clearly willing to be aggressive, Lewis then proceeded to take second, placing her in scoring position with no outs. Meanwhile, junior Zoey Cheek was waiting for her opportunity to contribute. She succeeded with a ground ball to the short stop, getting thrown out at first but advancing her teammate to third. With one out, Ella Aguiar could bring Lewis home with a simple fly ball. Instead, she sent a shot to right, racing into second base while Lewis crossed home. Aguiar's double would be one of just three William Woods' hits in game one, which ultimately ended in a 5-1 victory for the Braves.

Game two had much less action at the plate from either side. The Owls tallied just one hit, coming from Lexi Lewis, scoring zero runs. Sophomore Taylor Baumhoer was a force in the circle, however. In five innings of action, Baumhoer gave up three hits and a run, walking just one and striking out eight. The Owls lost game two 1-0.

Lewis and Brooklynn Spillman accounted for the other two hits by the Woods in game one.

William Woods now sits at 1-5 to begin the year. They will be back in action in their first appearance at Backer West in Fulton on Saturday, Feb. 21st against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 1 p.m.. On that same day, the ladies will travel down the road to face Westminster in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. as well.
