Men's Wrestling Continues Excellence in Iowa

Davenport, Iowa - As the road to the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament shortens, the William Woods men's wrestling team continues to build momentum with impressive performances. The Owls were on the road Saturday for a competitive non-conference dual against St. Ambrose University and came away with a decisive 35-15 victory. William Woods and the Fighting Bees competed in all but one weight class, with the Owls claiming eight individual wins to St. Ambrose's three.

The dual opened at 125 pounds, where freshman Emmanuel Trotter set the tone for William Woods. In a back-and-forth bout that went the full seven minutes, Trotter earned an 11-6 decision to put the Owls on the board.

Sophomore Braden Werdehausen followed with a dominant showing at 133 pounds, racing out to a 16-0 lead and securing a technical fall just 2:06 into the first period to add five points for William Woods.

After St. Ambrose answered with a pair of wins, the Owls seized control of the dual. Whit Nichols and Xander Sederburg each earned falls, pinning their opponents at 3:42 and 1:13, respectively, to break the match open.

With momentum firmly on their side, William Woods continued to pile on points in the later weights. Sophomore Elijah Brocksmith went 1:15 into the third round at 174 pounds, eventually building a 20-4 advantage, earning a technical fall. Junior Austen Wetzel extended his personal hot streak with another technical fall, finishing the bout midway through the second period.

To cap the scoring for the Owls, Dominic Mullin battled through all three periods to earn a major decision victory.

The win marked William Woods' third consecutive victory, improving the Owls to 6-7 overall. They return home Tuesday, Feb. 10, to face Missouri Valley College in a Heart of America Athletic Conference dual in Fulton.
