NEVADA, Mo. - In their final attempt to improve their conference record, William Woods Flag Football did just that by shutting out the Cottey College Comets, 25-0. The Owls advance to 4-6 overall and in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play with just three regular season games to go.
Each team struggled to find their footing early in the game, as possession changed four times before the first score. It was in their last drive of the first quarter that the Owls crossed the goal line, coming from the dynamic play of
Olivia Menard. The sophomore wideout took the pass from
Shamya Williams in stride, streaking past the Comet defense for a 48-yard score.
The second score of the game was the result of a 15-yard strike from Williams to
Addie Chilek. Chilek was responsible for the entirety of the drive, having caught another pass for five yards to set the Woods up for the score. With just 3:25 left in the first half, the Owls were leading Cottey 12-0. The Comets would attempt to close the gap and score before the break, taking shots down the field. However,
Nivea Boyd would allow no such thing, intercepting CC's quarterback and letting William Woods remain with the 12 point lead.
The other two scores for WWU would be via the connection of Williams and Menard, marking the best day for the pair on the season. Williams finished 27-42 for 225 yards and four touchdowns. Menard was exceptional, hauling in 12 receptions for 103 yards and three touchdowns. Chilek added seven receptions for 67 yards.
Boyd was all over the defensive backfield, batting down three passes to go along with her interception. Four other Owls broke up a pass, cementing a quality night for the Owls' defense.
William Woods Flag Football is set to play the University of Saint Mary in a non-conference contest in Leavenworth, Kansas on Saturday, Apr. 11th at 1 p.m.
