FULTON, Mo. – Coming off a dominant 9-0 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange University, William Woods women's soccer (2-1) continued its offensive onslaught with a 4-0 win over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (0-3) in the teams' first-ever meeting.
The action started early for the SMWC keeper, as she was forced to turn away her first shot just two minutes into play. KG Malefo and Tess Roberts each put shots on goal in the opening minutes, with Malefo's shot landing in the keeper's gloves and Roberts' ball rocketing off the inside of the crossbar.
Woods tallied its first goal in just the eighth minute when Roberts delivered a masterful strike past the outstretched arms of the netminder. Roberts hammered home a pass from sophomore midfielder Addie Robins for her third goal of the season to give Woods the early advantage. Six minutes later, Malefo struck gold with her third goal of the season off a spectacularly placed pass from Roberts. Woods rattled off 13 more shots in the half but was unable to grow its lead before the break.
Shortly after intermission, longtime Owl Megan Hughes earned her second goal of the season. Freshman Claudia Rodriguez earned the ball off a challenge in the front third and split the defender with a pass to Hughes, which was netted by the right-footed midfielder to grow the WWU lead to three. The Owls collected their final goal of the contest in the closing minutes as transfer Kirsten Kramer's pass found Olivia Menard for her first goal of the season.
The Pomeroys rattled off four shots on goal in the match, each of which was turned away by freshman keeper Bella Dehner. The Owls dominated the first-ever meeting between the two schools, putting 13 shots on goal in the contest.
William Woods takes a short break before hitting the road to take on Heart of America Conference opponent Mount Mercy on September 12.
