Columbia, Mo. -- After pulling off a five-game thriller to advance to the semifinals of the AMC Tournament, William Woods couldn't find the same luck on Thursday, falling in three sets (15-25, 13-25, 11-25) to the No. 3-ranked Columbia Cougars.
Amanda Henley (Jefferson City, Mo.) stood on her head for the Owls defense, recording a match-high 17 digs.
"Thanks to our seniors, they've kept us alive all year," said head coach Monica Renfrow. "Our defense was awesome tonight. We've lived and died by it all year and it showed up tonight. Our seniors, especially
Alicia Green and
Lauren Fleming have been the lifeline of this team the whole year."
After falling victim to a couple of unlucky breaks in the first set, the Owls picked up their offense in the second set, but Columbia recorded a second-set hitting percentage of .469 to leave WWU down 0-2 going into intermission.
The Owls nearly found a lifeline in the third set, capitalizing on a Cougar misplay to rattle off four straight points, but they couldn't finish off the comeback, eventually falling 11-25.
Green (Midlothian, Texas) led WWU with eight kills on the night, with
Morgan Bauer (Bloomer, Wis.) adding six. The Owls finished with a hitting percentage of .010 on the evening. William Woods ends the season with a record of 16-21.
