The William Woods University women's basketball team makes the short trek east to take on Avila University on Wednesday night, looking to keep the momentum rolling from Friday's 65-62 win over Culver-Stockton College. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Mabee Fieldhouse in Kansas City, Mo.
It is the 22nd meeting between the schools, but the first of
Dan Chapla's career and the first since the 1998-99 season. The Owls have dominated the series, holding a 16-5 edge, although Avila has won last two meetings between the schools.
The Owls are currently shooting .361 from the field and .256 from three-point range, and are currently ranked 43rd in the NAIA for three-point makes with 20 on the year. They are also ranked 20th nationally in rebounding, pulling down 198 boards so far this season. Individually,
Sharron Andrews (Oakland/Hayward, Calif.) leads the Owls offense, averaging 12.6 pts/gm. She is also rated nationally in steals (5th) and assists (16th) with 18 and 19 respectively. On the glass,
Megan Aubuchon (Old Monroe, Mo.) leads WWU with 39, good for 24th in the nation.
Avila enters the game with a 3-1 record, and is paced offensively by Courtney Gimlin's 12.5 pts/gm. The Eagles hold a slight shooting edge, averaging .363 on the season and .265 from distance. Sixth-year coach Larry Williams's squad has also been strong on the glass this year, posting a 42.8 reb/gm average.
